Chernookiy attends Boys State
   Alexander Chernookiy, son of Ivan and Svetlana Chernookiy, Sedalia, recently attended the 70s session of the American Legion Boys State, held June 13-20 at the University of Central Missouri, Warrensburg.
   While at the event, he was nominated for the Crowder City Highway Patrol and was elected Crowder City police chief and then Franklin County sheriff. His city won the Model City Award and the Model County Award.
   Chernookiy attends Smith-Cotton High School and was sponsored by American Legion Post 16, Sedalia. He has been a member of JROTC for three years and has held the ranks of corporal, first sergeant, captain and commander of the Raider Team.
   Among his other JROTC accomplishments, Chernookiy received the Honor of Distinction Award, placed fifth in the Raider Nationals in Atlanta, placed first for the overall male physical fitness award in 2007, placed sixth for the same award last year and fifth for that award this year. He received a national physical fitness award three years in a row.
   He has earned a letter in JROTC, track and academics. In addition, he has received the Sons of the American Revolution Award, placed fourth in the Science Club Envirothon and medaled in several track meets.
   His volunteer efforts include ringing bells for the Salvation Army, serving meals to veterans at the Missouri Veterans Home and taking part in the Memorial Day Flag Detail.


Linn State Technical College announces spring semester 2009 Honor Roll
   Linn State Technical College released the names of area students who achieved academic excellence during the 2009 spring semester.
   To be placed on the Honor Roll, a full-time student must earn a semester grade point average between 3.0 and 4.0 on a 4-point scale.
   With more than 25 programs, Linn State Technical College is Missouri's only public two-year technical college with a statewide mission. LSTC prepares students for profitable employment and         a life of learning.

Smithton names Honor Students for fourth quarter 2008 - 2009
   Smithton High School recently announced students named to the honor roll for the fourth quarter 2008-2009.
   Students named to the high honor roll were:

William Jewell students receive honors

   Samuel Hill, Sedalia,      recently received the W.D. Johnson Department of Religion Award for promise in ministry. He is a sophomore majoring in religion and political science at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo.
   On the Spring Deanšs List at William Jewell is Dana Harrelson, a junior majoring in nursing and psychology; Samuel Hill, a sophomore majoring in religion and political science; and Jenna Thompson, a senior majoring in business-marketing.
