Sign up now for State Fair parade Days are heating up and so is the excitement surrounding one of summerıs biggest events, the Missouri State Fair. Entries are now being accepted for the annual Opening Day Parade held Thursday, August 13, which is among one of the first competitions to be judged during the 11-day expo. Fair Director Mark Wolfe said, ³The parade is a great kick-off to the State Fair that has drawn a crowd of over 46,000 on each Opening Day of the previous two years.² Participants will compete for cash prizes in six categories including farm vehicle, antique & classic car, theme, float, horse and judgeıs choice. First place qualifiers in each category will receive $100 and second place winners $50. Entrants are encouraged to incorporate the Fair theme 'MOre Fun Than Ever!' in unique and creative ways. Parade entry forms will be accepted now through Wednesday, July 15, and are available on the Fairıs Web site www.mostatefair.com/contests.html along with submission instructions, or by calling 1-800-422-FAIR. About 140 entries are expected in the 6 p.m. parade which will follow the same route as last year beginning at Gate 3 along State Fair Blvd., passing by the Pepsi Grandstand, going around the half-mile track and finally exiting through Gate 2. A fly over by Whiteman Air Force Base will again be a highlight of the event. Opening Day is also referred to as Dollar Day when adults pay only $1 admission. Children age 12 and under are free every day. Opening Day Ceremonies will start at approximately 10:15 a.m. the same morning and will include a ribbon cutting at the new Pork Chop Place. Excitement will continue into the evening with a 7:30 p.m. Pepsi Grandstand performance by local favorites LoCash Cowboys and Cross Canadian Ragweed concluding with a celebration of fireworks. The $10 and $15 concert tickets keep the focus on affordability and can be purchased in advance from Ticketmaster or from the Box Office located on the fairgrounds.
