Memory Walk scheduled for September 20
The Alzheimer's Association's annual Memory Walk will take place on Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Missouri State Fairgrounds in Sedalia. Nearly 300 people from Sedalia and the surrounding area are expected to participate in this year's event. Walkers plan to raise $29,000 and funds will be used to help area families and patients with Alzheimer's disease.
This year the event has a new chair, Lisa Hayworth, a nurse from Four Seasons. She said that as a nurse, she sees the effects Alzheimer's and dementia daily. "Alzheimer's does not just affect the individual diagnosed with this disease ... it effects everyone -- husbands, wives, sons, daughters, grandchildren and friends."
The walk committee is calling on volunteers of all ages to become Champions in the fight against Alzheimer's by signing up a team for the 2008 Sedalia Memory Walk. Champions include those living with the disease, families, caregivers, and corporate and community leaders. Any one interested in helping the committee with the event is invited to the planning meeting on Monday, Aug. 4, at Renee's Diner.
To start a team or make a donation, contact the Alzheimer's Association Mid-Missouri Chapter at www.alz.org/mid-missouri or 573.443.8665, email: midmoinfo@alz.org
The Alzheimer's Association is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer's research, care and support. Our mission is to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. Our vision is a world without Alzheimer's. For more information visit www.alz.org.

BRHC Foundation plans fall fund-raiser
The Bothwell Regional Health Center Foundation has announced that it has started work on a premier fund-raising event to be held this fall.
The event, dubbed "A Star-Studded Evening, will be held Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Sedalia Country Club. Activities planned include special entertainment and multiple hors d'oeuvre and cocktail stations. Tickets are expected to go on sale in early September.
"We want to introduce the Bothwell Regional Health Center Foundation to the community in a big way," said Foundation Chairman David Floyd. "Multiple teams of volunteers have been planning the details of this event for some time, and things are really starting to come together. We think the community will be pleased with the results."
Proceeds from the event will be used to purchase equipment for the BRHC Cancer Center, according Executive Director Melia Douglass. The fund-raising goal has been set at $60,000.
"Cancer treatment is the health center's fastest-growing service," Douglass said. "Our Star-Studded Evening lets the community have a role in helping the health center continue to enhance its cancer treatment capabilities, while having a good time in the process. It's what you could call a win-win situation, and we hope it will be the social event of the season."
